CIRI-FRAME/ENERCUBE

Laboratory for the up-scaling of production and recycling processes of components and cells for electrochemical energy storage and conversion systems.

EnerCube is the CIRI-FRAME laboratory dedicated to the development and technology transfer of electrochemical systems for energy storage and conversion.

The laboratory seeks to establish itself as the leading regional and national platform for producing Li-ion and next-generation (post-lithium-ion) batteries with a lower environmental footprint, while also advancing other emerging electrochemical technologies including super-capacitors, redox flow batteries and fuel cells.

EnerCube takes a sustainability-focused approach, with a particular emphasis on using materials not considered critical by the European Union, minimising production waste, and ensuring that devices can be recycled. In this regard, the laboratory also stands out as the first to specialise in the end-of-life management of Li-ion batteries, developing innovative processes for their environmentally friendly recycling.

THE LABORATORY

The EnerCube laboratory uses a prototyping line for Li-ion batteries capable of producing pouch cells with a footprint of around 25 cm². It boasts a dry room with a dew point of –40 °C (equivalent to 0.59% relative humidity) and a localised dew point of –60 °C (equivalent to 0.06% relative humidity). The laboratory is completed by test stations for batteries up to 15A, an argon-fuelled MBraun glovebox and a test station for PEM-FC fuel cells.
