CIRI FRAME/Environmental Management and Applied Physics Research Group

Environmental Sustainability Assessment (ESA) Lab

“Augusto Righi” Department of Physics and Astronomy (DIFA)

The research group, coordinated by staff from the Department of Physics, is based at the Sartori Laboratories in Ravenna and the CRAEM in Marina di Ravenna. Its work centres on the modelling of product, process and environmental systems – with a particular focus on soil – to create innovative solutions that promote sustainability and contribute to mitigation of the climate crisis.

Its expertise ranges from calculating carbon and environmental footprints (at both product and organisational level) to making comprehensive assessments of sustainability and environmental impacts. Alongside these services, the group develops “decision support system” software tools to support companies and institutions in their sustainable innovation strategies.

The approach adopted is based on Life Cycle Thinking, with an advanced application of the LCA (Life Cycle Assessment) methodology, developed in accord with UNI EN ISO 14040:2021, 14067:2018 and 14064-1:2019. The analysis is applied both at the experimental and pilot level, so that the sustainability of products and processes can be assessed at an early stage of their development.

Through collaboration with public and private stakeholders, the research group contributes to the design of decarbonisation pathways and the definition of practical strategies for emission reduction. The group places special emphasis on the agri-food sector, applying innovative life‑cycle assessment (LCA) methods that integrate soil carbon sequestration, carbon credit calculations, and research into the environmental fate of pesticides.

PROJECTS AND RESEARCH AREAS

The team has ten researchers and collaborators, who are involved in numerous national and international projects. These include the NET-Fuels Project, dedicated to the development of clean fuel production, renewable energy and solutions to safeguard soil health.
